A Life Remembered

Obituary

Norman H Helms Jr.

Norman H. Helms Jr., a cherished member of the Port Arthur community, passed away on August 31, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on July 13, 1942, in Port Arthur, Norman lived a life rich in hobbies, interests, and accomplishments that left a profound impact on those around him.

Norman’s educational journey commenced at Thomas Jefferson High School, where he was the youngest member of the graduating class of 1959. He then pursued further studies at Lamar College, obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, alongside two years at a communications college, eventually becoming an esteemed member of the Lamar Alumni Association.

With a passion for communications, Norman first obtained his novice Ham Radio license in 1958, quickly advancing to a general license the following year. His dedication to this pursuit saw him not only enjoy the hobby but also build his own squeeze box, showcasing his commitment to the craft. For 40 years, he contributed to the QCWA "Peckerwood Net," fostering connections among fellow enthusiasts.

A devoted member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Norman’s spiritual life was an integral part of who he was. He also held the distinction of being a Life Member of the Museum of the Gulf Coast and was an active participant in the Golden Triangle CFMA, exemplifying his commitment to the community and the arts.

Norman’s personal interests were diverse and fulfilling. He was an avid ham radio operator, an outdoor enthusiast who relished hunting and fishing, a lover of photography and gardening, a connoisseur of Cajun music, and a skilled woodworker. Each of these passions added layers to his character, enriching both his life and the lives of those fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by his beloved spouse, Betty J. Helms; his children, Paul Foster, Julie Hirschfield, and Andrew Foster; along with three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward his legacy of love and dedication.

Norman was predeceased by his father, Norman "Ted" Helms Sr., who passed away on January 15, 1999; his mother, Mabel Helms, who left this world on October 26, 1995; and his son, David Foster, who departed on January 14, 2021.

In remembrance of Norman H. Helms Jr., a visitation will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Port Neches, Texas, on September 4, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a Funeral Service at 2:00 PM.

As we celebrate the life of Norman, we honor a man who embraced life fully, leaving an indelible mark on his family, friends, and community. His joy, passions, and unwavering spirit will be missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
