James Emerson Brayton

James Emerson Brayton, 75, of Orange passed away at home on Saturday, November 30, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

James was born on October 7, 1949, in Port Arthur, Texas to Horace and Hester Brayton. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1967, receiving two Purple Hearts while serving in Vietnam from 1968-1969. During his term of service, he served as a drill instructor and was honorably discharged in 1975 achieving the rank of Sergeant.

Following his military service, James worked as a tugboat captain with Marine Fueling Service. He was also employed in the convenience store industry as supervisor for convenience stores in the Lufkin and Golden Triangle areas. His hobbies included building and flying remote control airplanes, singing karaoke and dancing. He also enjoyed being on the water and fishing in his boat.

James was preceded in death by his parents Horace and Hester Brayton. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Leslie Brayton of Orange, his children Julie Olivares and husband Eric of Lufkin, Melissa Brayton and fiancée Calvin of Bridge City, Jay Brayton of Beaumont, Lisa Granger and husband J. R. of Orangefield, Tyler Gorrell and wife Casey of Austin, Adam Gorrell of Austin, sisters Brenda Childress of Conroe and Theresa Eggleston of Scott, Louisiana. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Colby Warner, Cody Warner, Kyle Warner, Alysha Allen, Kaycie Quin Whisenant, Christina Brayton, Aiden Brayton, Bryce Stanley, Aislee Granger, Max Gorrell and seven great-grandchildren, Adyson, John, Eli, Tatum, Reagan, Zayden and Zachary.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the dedicated team of ladies with Heart to Heart Hospice, Tasha, Edith and Angie. A special thanks to caregiver Aimee Jacobs.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, December 9, 2024, at St. Paul Methodist Church, 1155 W. Roundbunch Road, Bridge City, Texas, 77611, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the church officiated by Pastor Mark Bunch.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Paul Methodist Church or The Humane Society of Southeast Texas.
