Gustavo Mendez, Jr.

Gustavo Mendez, Jr., 91, of Nederland passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on August 26, 1932 in Cerralvo, Mexico to Otila Rendon Mendez and Gustavo Mendez, Sr. Gus has been a resident of the area for most of his life, graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1950. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Gus retired from Arco Polymers as a Lab Technician after 37 years of service. He and his wife, Elma were devout catholics being members of Little Flower of Jesus, Our Lady of Guadalupe before joining St. Charles of Borromeo Catholic Church in Nederland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Otila “Tila” Flores and his wife, Elma Mendez and his grandson, Tim Mack.

Gus is survived by his daughters, Liz Kroesch and husband Dan of Nederland, Mary Frances Howe of Nederland; his sons, Eric Mendez and wife Valencia of Nederland, Greg Mendez of Nederland; his grandchildren, Cody Mendez (Margarita), Austin Mendez (Ayana), Brock Howe, Laurel Kroesch, Albert Williams, Sherlyse Ilovhogie (Onome) and Amy Williams along with four great grandren, Mia and Vida Mendez, Elyse and Elly Ilovhogie. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Ramirez of Georgetown, Lolly Poskey of Nederland; his brother, John Mendez and wife Hermila of Nederland as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 from 6:00 PM till 8:00 PM with a rosary to be prayed at 6:30 PM at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home in Groves. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at St. Charles of Borromeo Catholic Church in Nederland with Father John Hughes serving as celebrant. Burial with Military Funeral Honors will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Groves under the direction of Clayton Thompson.
