Betty John Staton

Betty John Staton, 96, of Columbus, formerly of Port Arthur, passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at True Care Living in Columbus, Texas.

Betty was born on November 23, 1928 in Port Arthur, Texas to parents Gertrude (Hartman) and John Peter Salem. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, and she also worked in the family business (Salem Drugs) as a secretary for many years. Betty and her husband, Perry, owned and operated several convenience stores in the Port Arthur area. She enjoyed going shopping, working in her yard and traveling with her husband in their RV across the US, going to Canton, Texas and seeing the Mall of America. Betty loved spending time with her family and friends who will miss her dearly.

She was preceded in death her parents, John and Gertrude Salem and her son, Greg Allen Staton in 2014.

Betty is survived by her husband of 76 years, Perry Staton of Columbus, her son, Gary Staton and his wife, Sandy of Columbus, her brothers, John S. Salem Jr. of Marble Falls, Glenn Salem of Marble Falls and her sister, Glenda Bays of Cypress. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jason Staton, Jenny Staton, Ben Staton, Christen Staton and her great grandchildren, Emma Kate Staton, Even Staton and Easton Staton.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home, with Rev. Ron Hammonds officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held prior to the service from 10:00 AM until service time at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Groves.

Honoring Betty as pallbearers will Paul Kotz, Paul Oliver, Jason Staton, Ben Staton, Easton Staton and Russ Hebert. Honorary pallbearer will be Evan Staton.
