Julius Philip Savarino April 7, 1927 - January 14, 2009

Julius Philip (J. P.) Savarino, 81, of Port Arthur, Texas passed away on Wednesday,January 14, 2009 at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas after a short illness. He was born April 7, 1927 to Antoinette and Philip Savarino in Port Arthur, Texas.He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and Lamar State College. J. P.proudly served his country in the merchant marines and in the U. S. Army as a medic in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He retired from Texaco Sales Department as a supervisor. J. P. was very athletic and remained interested in sports all of his life. He was a member of the 1944 Thomas Jefferson State football team. His love of sports and his desire to help others inspired and enriched countless individuals. He was a lifelong resident of the area, and a member of the Italian-American Club, Thomas Jefferson Alumni Association, former volunteer at the Hospitality Center (P. A.) and a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. J. P. loved many and many loved him. He was a true humanitarian with a genuine heart. He will be greatly missed on earth but will have a special place in Heaven. Visitation will be on Friday, January 16, 2009 from 4 P.M. to 9 P.M. with a rosary to be recited at 7 P.M. in the Thompson Memorial Chapel at Clayton Thompson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Port Arthur with Rev. T. R. Blanco serving as celebrant. Entombment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. He was preceded in death by his wife Raquel Leon Savarino and his parents. He is survived by his sons Philip C. Savarino and his wife Vicki of Port Arthur, Texas, Salvador Savarino and his wife Susan of Spring, Texas, David Savarino and his wife Gail of Nederland, Texas and his grandchildren Samuel Savarino, Kendal Savarino and Kamren Savarino. He is also survived by his sisters Virginia "Nan" Savarino, Margaret Trahan and Barbara Elizondo all of Port Arthur, Texas along with a host of nieces and nephews.
