Messages of Love

From family and friends

Laura Joe and I attended Thomas Jefferson High School together and most days ate lunch together. We were a lot alike. Our families meant a great deal to us and we shared many stories about our families while eating lunch. We were sitting in the cafeteria listening to a transistor radio, or maybe over the PA system, when the Russian ships headed for Cuba were turned around. We had all agreed that if a war broke out, we hoped it would be before Friday when we both had several tests scheduled. We had read and heard stories of lost graduation rings being found at the beach and through the initials engraved inside of the ring and the graduation year on the ring, the owners had been located. In the 1965 graduating class, Laura Joe and I (Linda Joyce McAfee) were the only students with LJM initials. We agreed that if one of us lost our ring, it would be easy to locate the owner. When my son was in his senior year of high school and my daughter in her senior year of college, I sold my graduation ring, along with several other pieces of jewelry, to help pay for a special present for each of my children. While waiting to see how much I would receive for the jewelry, I thought "Well, Laura Joe, now you are the only one with a 1965 TJ ring with LJM." (I was told the ring would be melted down.) After graduation, I went on to Port Arthur College and I am sad to say we lost contact. I am sorry to read of Laura Joe's death but she will live on in my heart as being an important part of my time at Thomas Jefferson High School.
