Obituary

Francine D. Miller August 5, 1928 - July 13, 2011

Francine DeLeon Miller, 82 of Port Arthur peacefully passed away on Wednesday morning at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont with her son and daughter-in-law at her side. Francine was a proud American, a Texan, a devout Catholic, an ex-Dominican nun, a disabled American Veteran of the U.S. Navy, a loving mother, and a dedicated teacher. She stated "I am who I am, I am one of many at the crossroads of my experiences, and thanks be to God" Born August 5th, 1928 in Port Arthur, TX. to Alex and Maclovia Gomez DeLeon, she grew up loving the simplicity of life, generosity of spirit allied with the strong sense of self, love of heritage and country. She learned the importance of family love, dignity of the human being and work, sharing and helping our neighbors, pride in seeking a better education, and above all love and service to God and country. She attended Thomas Jefferson High School graduating in 1948. She attended college for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. She served her country proudly from 1950 to 1954 receiving a Honorable discharge. In 1954 she entered the Queen of the Holy Rosary, Dominican Convent, Mission San Jose, California. She served our Lord for two years faithfully until illness required her to leave the order. She returned to Texas, married Paul B. Miller in 1957, they had one son, Robert E. Miller. She entered college in May 1963 obtained her Texas Teachers certificate and taught until she retired from P.A. I. S. D. in the early 90's. During her teaching career she attended several institutes to further her career. Francine was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Albert, Joe Angel and Arthur DeLeon and sister Nora Baez. She is survived by her son, Robert E. and her daughter-in-law Cindy Miller of Groves, brother, Dr. Joe Deleon and his wife June of Mexico, sisters, Nina Clifton of Sugarland and Connie and her husband Richard Pedraza of Port Arthur. Two Grandchildren, Brandon Gouthier and Misty Castille, three Great Grandchildren, Makayla Pirtle, Kade Alan Castille and Flor Gouthier. Special thanks to the wonderful staff at St. E's and Odyssey Hospice who took loving care of Mom.
