George Leo Scully, Jr.

George Leo Scully, Jr. November 20, 1938 - October 3, 2011

George L. Scully, Jr. was called to his eternal home on October 3, 2011. He was born on November 20, 1938, to George L. Scully, Sr. and Anne Marie Hebert in Port Arthur, Texas. George graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1957. After graduating, George went into the Real Estate and Insurance business with his father and eventually took over the company that his father started. George loved selling real estate, which was a true passion of his. He obtained his real estate license in 1959, and was recognized with a 50 year award from the local Board of Realtors in 2009. In November of this year, he was to receive the Emeritus Award for being the longest serving member of the Mid-County Board of Realtors, including serving one term as President. In August of 1959, George married the prettiest girl in Jefferson County, Mary Glorioso. Together they have 5 boys, 4 daughters in law, and 16 grandchildren. George and Mary celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary this past summer. They were still in their honeymoon phase, even after 52 years! Their marriage was a shining example of what true love looks like. Throughout George's life, he had multiple hobbies. He flew airplanes, loved high tech gadgets, hosting gatherings at his cabin in Crystal Beach, tinkering in the garage, and making pancakes for his grandchildren. He taught so many about strong family values and emphasized the importance of sticking by each other's side, even when times were rough. George loved his hometown. He served his community through various organizations throughout his life. He served as president and board member of the Mid-County Board of Realtors, was an active member of St. James Catholic Church, former member of Sertoma, and one of the initial members of Port Arthur Mardi Gras and Krewe of Aurora. George loved Port Arthur Mardi Gras and enjoyed seeing the growth of participation each year as it got bigger and bigger. George is survived by his adoring bride of 52 years, Mary Glorioso Scully. George leaves a beautiful legacy through his sons Lee, Steve and wife Sheila, Kevin and wife Sophia, Mike and wife Cinnamon, and Darren and wife Lana. He was known as "Paw-Paw" to his grandchildren, Mitchell, Cassie, Leah, Sandi, Mary, Matthew, David, Josh, Justin, Jacob, Canyon, Ocean, Sky, Sierra, Maddie, and Aubry. He was a wonderful brother to sisters Mary Loretta Gaspard, Patricia George, Helen Gilmore, and Lillian Hernandez. George may not be physically here with us anymore on earth, but he has touched the heart of everyone that knew him and his sweet spirit and positive attitude will live on through his many family and friends. He loved God, his family, and his friends with all his heart. His laughter will not soon be forgotten, but will be missed by all. The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff at Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX. They made his journey "home" a journey of love and dignity. Their professionalism and compassion made a fingerprint on their hearts.

I have many fond memories of the family, Mr. Scully, George and Mary Loretta. When we were kids my Dad and Mr. Scully visited from time to time. George worked at Travis-Scully Hardware when he was a young fellow. Even though we were not close, I remember him well. And it was always a pleasure when we ran into each other. Sorry for your family's loss. May you find comfort in your many memories of such a good and dear one.

Mr. Scully, I want to thank you for your kind words and advice you gave to me 8 years ago while I was a lost college student, you gave me a list of few real esate and motivational books to read which have changed my life, and advice here and there. I am now on my 2nd new build duplex construction and I've done so far 1 renovation/flip and 1 owner financed home sale. I plan to do many more, and I can honestly say that you were the sole person that started me on my real estate path. I owe you very much for you're help. Thank you so so so very much! You will be dearly missed. -Luis

George was one of those rare individuals that "made your day"when you met him or spent some time with him. Always upbeat and optimistic he made people feel important in his presence. And, of course, his gift for gab was notorious as was his ability to tell a good story. He will be sorely missed. Our condolences go out to Mary and the rest of his family.
