Erwin Leo Venghaus

Erwin Leo Venghaus, 88, of Port Arthur, Texas passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2016 at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas in Port Arthur, Texas.

Erwin was born March 25, 1927 to parents Bertha Oppermann Venghaus and Fredrich Venghaus at Shaws Bend, Texas. Before the war Erwin moved to Port Arthur and worked as a Marine Mechanic and Welder working at Gulf Port and Burton Ship Yards in Port Arthur. He served his country in WWII in the US Army, Company B 793rd Military Police Battalion and was stationed in Germany. Upon returning to the United States Erwin went to work for Gulf States Utilities Company as a Lineman/Trouble Shooter and Foreman,working for 39 years before retiring in 1986.

Erwin enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching football andhe was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW Post 797) and the American Legion (Post 7). And is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, in Groves.

Erwin was preceeded in death by his by his loving wife of 62 years, Evelyn Walther Venghaus. His parents Bertha and FredrichVenghaus and four siblings.

Erwin is survived by his son Leonard Venghaus and wife Jackie of Marble Falls, and Janet Venghaus Mitchell and husband Ralph of Port Arthur, three grandchildren, Cameron Venghaus, Jeremy Mitchell and Sarah Morris, and three great grandchildren, James, Mathew and Kenzie Morris.

Visitation will be on Sunday, March20, 2016 from 5PM to 8PM at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be at 10AM Monday, March 21, 2016 in the Thompson Memorial Chapel at Clayton Thompson with Rev. Richard Turner, officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Clayton Thompson.

Such a sweet man! I worked with him at the Mid County office of GSU while I was a highschool senior and went on to work at the GSU in Port Arthur after graduation. He was also so kind and friendly. I am so sorry for your loss. Sincerely, Regina
