My relationship with Jim got off to a quick start. Shortly after meeting his first-born daughter Judy at a Mardi Gras parade in Nola, we decided, why wait, we knew, and decided to marry very shortly thereafter. We took the drive from New Orleans to Groves for my introduction to my new family. We got in just before Jim arrived home from his job at the Fina refinery where he worked his entire career. Judy and I were waiting out in front of the house on Terrell Street and a 67 white dodge step side pick-up came down the street right on schedule. When it was still 50 or 60 yards away I could see a yellow hard hat under which was a weathered face with a big wide pleasant smile. Our introduction went well but turned out to be much longer than any of us anticipated. Shortly after semi-formalities Jim said "hey how about giving me a hand with some Sheetrock". I eagerly agreed as it was a chance to make a nice first impression. The hand turned out to be leaving almost immediately to pick up a large load of the 5/8 " 4x8 sheets at the building supply in Groves and driving the heavy load all the way up to Hemphill to the camp at Toledo Bend, a camp that would eventually become his retirement home of over 30 years. We talked the entire slow trip up and covered a vast amount of topics from work experience, philosophies of how to live well, and quite a bit about hippies and such since I had the look. There were many questions that were apparently answered well and the introduction of many varied opinions. We unloaded the truck at the camp' and kicked around the plan for the conversion of a small trailer sitting down a little dirt road out in heavy woods. He apparently could tell this was my kind of thing... including the prospects of future fishing on the lake. The trip home I got to talk of my adventures out in the north woods on fishing trips, my family, my work, cars on and on. We spoke of the rather hasty marriage plans that did not seem to disturb him at all. His only comment was " you sure ?" My answer again apparently satisfactory. We got back to Groves about seven hours later in the dark and brought back a bond that lasted the entire 42 years we knew each other. He did request I take good care of his daughter even though " she doesn't seem to need much help at all". I loved Jim and am still happily married to Judy. He was a kind, wise, independent, hard-working man from whom I continued to learn a lot.

I am so sorry for your loss. I know how much you loved your Dad and how worried you were about him. You did a great job taking care of him the last couple of years. He is healthy again in heaven. I know he loved all his daughters and grandchildren very much. If there is anything we can do let us know. You will be in our prayers.
