Martha Ann McCarter August 22, 1929 - October 24, 2016

Martha Ann McCarter, 87, of Port Arthur, Texas passed away on Monday, October 24, 2016 at Harbor Hospice in Beaumont.

She was born on August 22, 1929 to Nell Jernigan Butts and Rev. Stanton M. Butts in Smithville, Mississippi. Martha has been a resident of the area since 1961. She retired from P. A. I. S. D. as a secretary at Lincoln High School after 20 years of service. Martha was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Port Acres.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Rev. Clovis Butts, her husband, Lee Roy McCarter, Jr. son, David S. McCarter and her son-in-law, Thomas Browne.

Martha is survived by her daughter, Cathy Browne of Beaumont, her two sons, Jim McCarter and wife, Dolores of LaBelle, Lee Roy McCarter, III and wife, Caroline of Birmingham, Alabama. Her seven grandchildren, Brittany Robinson, Ben Broussard,Lacey Broussard, Ryan Broussard, Austin McCarter, Kaitlin McCarter and David McCarter along with four great grandchildren with one on the way.

She is also survived by her four brothers, George Butts and wife, Carolyn of Florence, MS, Benny Butts and wife, Kate of Water Valley, MS, Charlie Butts and wife, Nita of Brandon, MS, Don Butts and wife, Linda of Louisville, KY, her sister-in-laws, Pat Butts of Dickson, TN, and Ruth Ann Cook of Greenville, NC as well as numerous nieces and nephews, cousins along with several extended family members.

Visitation for family and friends will be on Thursday, October 27, 2016 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home in Groves. Graveside services will be at 10:00 AM Friday, October 28, 2016 in Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Clayton Thompson. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home prior to the service.

Martha Ann was a wonderful person to have had as a neighbor in Port Acres. She often held court on her back porch and was always smiling and full of life. Our warmest thoughts and prayers are extended to Cathy, Lee, and Jim. We thank them for sharing their Mom with us.
