Oscar Alvarez Vara “Crow”
Oscar Alvarez Vara, 83, of Port Arthur, Texas, passed away on March 1, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at Clayton Thompson in Groves.
Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at Clayton Thompson in Groves.
Born in Port Arthur, Texas, on May 16, 1941, he was the son of Manuel Vara and Delores Alvarez Vara. Oscar dedicated a significant portion of his career to Unical 76 as an operator and served as a Merchant Seaman for Sabine Towing. He was known not just for his professional accomplishments but also for his passion for life and family. As a big history buff, Oscar enjoyed sharing fascinating stories and lessons from the past with his loved ones. His cooking talents were well-known, particularly as a BBQ grill master. He had a way of bringing people together around good food, and his family truly enjoyed the delicious meals he prepared. The joy he found in cooking was matched by his love for spending time with his family. Oscar was a wonderful grandfather who created many enjoyable outings with his grandchildren. They affectionately called him "Paw Paw Big O," and those adventures left a lasting imprint on their hearts. He took great pride in being a big family man, and his kids were his pride and joy. In addition to his love for family, Oscar had creative interests that included woodworking, painting, and leather working. He loved working with his hands, creating beautiful pieces that showcased his skills and creativity. Oscar will be remembered for his kindness, love for history, and the warmth he brought to his family's lives. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Delores Vara; siblings, Alice Hernandez, Robert Vara, Ray Vara, Raymond Vara, Toni Guerrero, Rosa Availa, and Carol Chauvin.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Connie Vara; daughters, Anna Lalonde and husband Kenny, Tina Kendrick and husband Dale, Sonia Calvo and husband Ken, Lisa Savoie, and son, Oscar Manny Vara and wife Leah; and ten grandchildren; five great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family and friends.
Cremation will be held under the direction of Clayton Thompson in Groves.
