Maye Hanson, a beloved matriarch, peacefully departed this world on January 16, 2025, in Groves, Texas, at the age of 92. Born on December 11, 1932, in the quaint town of Chireno, Texas, Maye was a beacon of warmth and kindness throughout her remarkable journey of life.
For an impressive 28 years, Maye dedicated herself to the community as a cashier, stocker, and door greeter at Walmart, where her unwavering commitment and gracious disposition touched all who crossed her path. She was more than just a familiar face; she was a comforting presence, embodying the very essence of customer service with her genuine smile and kind words.
A proud member of the Cowboy Church of Orange County, Maye’s spiritual life was a cornerstone of her existence. She found joy in worship, reflected in her deep love for reading and enjoying her cherished soap operas. Her interests painted a portrait of a woman who embraced life’s simple pleasures, relishing each moment spent with loved ones.
Maye’s legacy lives on through her adored daughters, Glenda Soileau (Gary), Kathy Viator (Victor), and Brenda Duhon (Mike), as well as her devoted son, Ray McCelland (Christian), and her step daughters, Rebecca Holbrook (Trent), and Donna Hanson. The light of her love shines brightly in her grandchildren—Jason Duhon, Bobby Duhon, Regina Trahan, Anthony Trahan, April Duhon, Darrell Lowe, Jeremy Lowe, and June McClelland—and her several great-grandchildren. Maye cherished her family deeply and nurtured lasting relationships that will forever echo in their hearts.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob Hanson, whose memory she carried with her throughout her life, as well as her parents, Eben Taylor York and Bertha York. Maye was also mourned by the loss of her grandson, Corbyn Lowe, and her brothers and sisters, whose absence she felt profoundly but whose spirits she honored through her loving nature.
Maye’s visitation will be held at Clayton - Thompson Funeral Directors in Groves, Texas, on Thursday, January 23, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by her funeral service at 11:00 AM, concluding at noon.
Honoring Maye as Pallbearers will be, Russell Waddell, Darrell Lowe, Ray McClelland, Jason Duhon, Bobby Duhon, and Colby Viator. Serving as an Honorary Pallbearer will be Victor Viator and Mike Johnson.
As we celebrate the life of this extraordinary woman, let us remember Maye Hanson not only for her achievements but for the love she shared, the kindness she bestowed, and the myriad ways in which she enriched the lives of those around her. Her spirit will forever linger in the hearts of her family and friends, a testament to a life well-lived and a love deeply felt.
