Carl Joseph Guidry aka Honey, Daddy, Little Pop, Papa Elf, CJ and from his High School years, Black Flash, passed away on February 11, 2021 at 12:34 am. He was 72 years young and although his health had gone, he still had that Guidry smile, sense of humor and wit about him…all the way to the very end. Those of you who know Carl know exactly what this means! He is leaving behind his beloved Lana…wife, friend, confidant, partner in crime but most importantly, his soul mate of 56 years; three children, Carlana Ann Zapoli and her husband, Joey; Leigh-An Sonnier and her husband, Wes; and his one and only son whom he referred to as his “Ace”, Brian Anthony Guidry; in addition to five grandchildren Chloe Chiasson, DeLani Chiasson, Presleigh Sonnier, Grayson Gasca and Carson Gasca; one great grandson, Valen Gasca; one sister, Darlene Ann Perry and a lifelong best friend, Jessie Resendez. He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Rita Guidry; three brothers, James Guidry, Sr., Lonnie Ray Guidry, and Roy Guidry, Jr.
Carl graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1967. He had an undying love for the Yellow Jackets so much so that he claimed maroon and gold to be one of his favorite colors! One of his nicknames, Black Flash, was given to him by the Local News channel because of his speed on the football field! This was a nickname he was very proud of but not nearly as proud of being called “Little Pop” by his most favorite little people in his life, his grandchildren. All of whom he wouldn’t have been blessed with if it weren’t for falling in love with his soul mate and mother of his children, Lana, at the young age of 16. Lana was just 14. Their love story is nothing short of special, one that people never tire of listening to and one he never grew tired of telling.
In his downtime he loved spending time with his friends, playing booray, going to the horse races, watching football and playing golf. He was a natural on the greens. Carl could literally walk up to the tee box in his white vans with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and hit further and straighter than anyone he was playing with and ultimately shoot the best round! Unfortunately, according to his friends, he wasn’t as lucky at the card table as he was on the golf course! Another little known fact about him was that he loved watching the Dr. Phil show..he never missed an episode!
Anyone who knew Carl knew he had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. You could always depend on him when needed, no matter if it was a broken air conditioner in the heat of summer or a mouth that needed to be fed. He spent many a night, after working all day at the refinery, taking care of his elderly customers whom he knew would never be able to pay their bill and he would do it gladly. It didn’t matter how big or small the favor…he was there. As one of his friends said, “he was a great team mate, willing to run through a wall for his buddies” and that was him in a nut shell.
He worked at and retired from Gulf/Chevron/Valero. He was there for 34 years in the Air conditioning, Refrigeration department. Carl retired when his last grand baby, Presleigh, was born so he could be her “Nanny” and what a great Nanny he was! He was able to care for her until she was 9 months old and during that time he was able to experience a lot of her milestones which he prided himself in and never missed an opportunity to brag about it to anyone who would listen! Especially to Lana, who retired soon thereafter! She definitely stole a piece of his heart and vice versa.
His smile, his laugh, his words of encouragement and never ending “I love you’s” will be missed more than can ever be expressed in words. So Honey, Daddy, Little Pop, Papa Elf, CJ and Black Flash….we will see you when we see you! Until then, we hope you’re "dancing in the sky”, (jitter bugging to be exact) with Maw Maw and Paw Paw and all your brothers! And even though our hearts hurt and will for a while, we know you’re finally in good hands which gives us the peace we need to go on without you!
