Capt. Philip Raymond Nolan, Sr., 84 of Bridge City, Texas died, Saturday, May 30, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Port Arthur, Texas. Capt. Nolan was born in Massachusetts in 1924, and has lived in the Groves, Port Arthur, Toledo Bend and Bridge City area for most of his life. He graduated from Mass Maritime Academy in Cape Cod, Mass., and was a Merchant Seaman for 46 years. He retired from the Texaco Marine Dept. in 1989. Captain Nolan was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #7, the Veterans of Foreign War Post 797, as well as the Knights of Columbus of Bridge City. He was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church of Bridge City. He volunteered with the Bridge City/Orangefield Ministerial Alliance. While living at Toledo Bend, he was the Assistant Fire Chief of the Toledo Bend Vol. Fire Department and was Eucharistic Minister with the Catholic Church. Capt Nolan is preceded in death by his parents, Mary Elizabeth Collins and Francis Nolan, daughter Geraldine "Jill" Nolan of Quincy, Mass., one sister and three brothers. He is survived by his loving wife, Rose (Placette) Nolan, daughters, Janie Connolly and husband Jack of Hanson, Mass., Denise Placette Perron and husband Doc of Groves, Tammy Lumpkin and husband John of Bridge City, sons, Philip Nolan, Jr. and wife Katie of New Orleans, Gordon Placette, Jr. of Austin, Daniel Placette and wife Laurel of Bridge City and Stephen Placette of Orange. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and his beloved little "Toby".
