Edwin George Benkert, 85, of Sam Rayburn passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Timberlake Nursing Home in Jasper. He was born October 23, 1924 to Mary Lula Rayon Benkert and Edwin George Benkert in Port Arthur, Texas. He lived in the Port Arthur for most of his life before moving to Sam Rayburn after retiring in 1981. E. G. served in the U. S. Navy during WWII, aboard the USS North Carolina, a battleship, where he participated in 16 major battles. He retired from Texaco Island as a supervisor after 35 years of service in 1981. He also owned and operated Ed Benkert's Gulf Service Station on Gulfway Drive in Port Arthur for 11 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman in his early years. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Groves. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Doris Jean Benkert. He is survived by his wife, Francis Benkert, his children Lynn and Danny Benkert, two step-children, four grandchildren, Chad and wife Stephanie Benkert, Summer and husband Mark Herrington, Bridget and husband Curtis Price and Jason Rasa along with six great grandkids.
