George E. Sanford, Jr. left this life on September 16, 2010, at the age of 83. He is survived by his spouse, Catherine Sanford; son John Sanford, wife Melinda and their sons Taylor and Conner; son James Sanford and his daughter Gabrielle; brother Chapman Sanford and his wife Mary Ann; stepchildren Molly Bobbitt, Benny Britt and Justin Teddlie, and their families; and a large number of other kin and good friends. George was born August 6, 1927, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He spent the first nine years of his life in Cuba, with frequent trips back to the U.S., especially Louisiana and Florida, to visit family and friends. He grew up loving all things outdoors, and spent many happy hours hunting, fishing and camping. If you spent more than a few minutes around George, you know he loved to talk, and had stories for almost every occasion. He worked, at various times, as a jeweler, fire and burglar alarm installer and parasitological researcher, among other things. He was an artist and an avid scuba diver when he was a bit younger. Perhaps the best one-word description for George would be "curious"-he never quit asking why, and how, and what if. He rarely met a stranger, and had friends from all walks of life.
