Edith Johnson

December 24, 1923 - September 22, 2012

Daisy Edith Johnson, passed away on Saturday, September 22, 2012, at Harbor Hospice, Beaumont, Texas. She has gone to her eternity of joy in the Lord. Born on December 24, 1923, in Memphis, Tennessee, she lived in Port Arthur for most of her 88 years, but spent the past ten years living in Orange, Texas. She was a graduate of the Convent of the Sisters of The Good Shepherd, the school and orphanage in Memphis, Tennessee, where she lived and grew up. She trained to be a lab technician, upon arriving in Port Arthur, and worked for several pediatricians, her favorite being her dear friend, Dr. Harris Hosen. She was most recently a member of St. Francis of Assisi, Orange, but had been a lifelong member of St. Joseph parish, Port Arthur, where she taught CCD,, served as a Eucharistic Minister, and was the Director of Religious Education, for a number of years. She was also active in the parish in many other ways, as well, most notably in helping with the Vietnamese community resettlement project in the mid 1970's. She is he still known to many families in that community as "Mama", and "Grandma". She loved her Vietnamese family, as they love her, and have remained very close and devoted to one another for many years. Edith will always be remembered for her love of children, sewing, her love for learning anything to do with her laptop computer, and most importantly for her love for her Lord and Savior, Jesus, and her lifelong devotion to Him, and to a life lived in service to Him. Edith was preceded in death, by her son, William Brice Johnson; her husband, Pershing Joseph "Duck" Johnson, parents, John Randolph Newman, and Margie Clem; and her beloved brother, Bob Newman. She is survived by her oldest daughter, Sandra Nettles and son-in-law, Carl; daughter, Marlene Ravey and son-in-law, Eldridge; and youngest daughter, Priscella Burns and son-in-law, Dale. She is also survived by her eleven loving grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and six nieces and nephews. The family requests that you please join them in a celebration of a Christian life well lived, from 5 PM to 8 PM with a Rosary to be prayed at 6 PM Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at Clayton-Thompson Funeral Home in Groves. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Port Arthur at 11:00 am, Wednesday, September 26, 2012 with Rev. Stephen McCrate and Rev. Francis Conroy, con-celebrating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Groves.
