After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1941, he attended the Merchant Marine Academy as a cadet and graduated from Kings Point Academy. When there he underwent sea duty in the North Atlantic and fondly remembered giving chocolates to children in Italy during WWII. In 1946 he joined Lykes Bros. Steamship Company as a second mate and latter as a chief mate and relief master. He sailed the "Honeymoon route" to Cuba and the Puerto Rico. He came ashore in November, 1955 to be closer to his family and established his business as a Marine Surveyor for National Cargo Bureau with an office in the Adams Building in downtown Port Arthur. He joined the elite Sabine Pilots in January, 1965, and dedicated his life and service to them until his retirement in January, 1993. During that time he served as boat superintendent from 1970 until 1974, and Vice-President from 1982 thru 1984. He oversaw the building of several new pilot boats and brought in the first Russian ship to an American port. After his retirement, He and Sherry traveled the world with Holland America Cruise Line. They visited Europe, the Panama Canal, the Carribean, the Holey Land and many other exotic places. They loved spending time with their children and grandchildren and dancing with friend at the Pompano Club when their feet were on dry land. In his later years, he enjoyed seeing how many tomato plantings he could get in one season and growing Tyler Roses with Frances. He was grateful for the loving care he received at the Oak Grove Nursing Home and Odyssey Hospice care and especially from his daughter-in-law Roxanne. He belonged to many organizations including The American Legion, The Commodores and Retired Pilots Assn. He loved his country and will be buried with full military honors.
