Amparo Hernandez Salas, 95 of Port Arthur, died on Monday, July 15,2013. She was born on May 24, 1918 in Lampaso, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. She has been a lifelong resident of Port Arthur and Groves for over 80 years. Amparo was the matriarch of her family and devoted her time to nuturing and caring for them. She loved to go fishing, and cooking special meals for her family. She enjoyed reading, movies and bingo. She also loved to visit with family and friends. She was a most gentle and caring person. She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church for years and later attended Triumph Church. Between 1940-1945 she worked at the Texas Steel Manufacturing Company near Houston Ave. She worked for Mr. Ellis, where bomb shells were manufactured for the Navy. She took much pride in working there, but quit in July to be married on August, 1945. In later years she worked as a beautician and opened Salas Beauty Salon. She loved being a hair stylist. Mrs. Salas was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Salvador Salas, son Gerald Salas, and two brothers, Roberto and Jesus Hernandez and sister, Maria Antonieta Gallegos. She is survived by her daughter, Diana Reho and husband Mike of P. A., son, Edward Salas of Austin, Grandson, Ari Paskell of Ned. and granddaughters, Brandy Hebert of P. A. and Misty Dean of Austin, Great grandchildren, Alyssa Hebert, Nathan Ceja and Gionni Calcoat, Sister, Connie Ramirez of Houston and numerous nieces and nephews in Mexico and the United States. A gathering of Mrs. Salas family and friends will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, July 18 at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home in Groves. A celebration of Life Memorial Service will be at 2:00 PM Friday, July 19 at Clayton Thompson with interment to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
