Agustina Cortez, 90, of Groves, Texas passed away on Monday, March 24, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 9, 1923 to Felisa Cortez and Jose Mariano in Gualan-Los Amates, Guatemala, Central America. She was preceded in death by her mother and her siblings, Bernardino and Octavia Cortez. Agustina was very determined and self sacrificing for the betterment of her family even at an early age. Agustina's destiny to come to America started from her early childhood. When she was given to an orphanage who was going to bring her to America after her father passed away and her mother could no longer care for all her children. But her love for her mom and her siblings, caused her to lose that opportunity to complete that journey. Her desire to learn caused her to do many laborious work in exchange for people to teach her many pratical things such as crochet, knit, sew, cook, and etc. Things that she knew would be beneficial in her future. As time passed her strong desire to go to the city and move on to leave the farm life behind. While in the city she strived once again to gain a better education. This is where she began her personal family life and found herself needing to put aside her personal dreams and desired aspirations to become that selfless mother that we all knew. She retired from St. Mary's Hospital after many years of faithful service to again devote herself to assist in the raising of her many grandchildren. Agustina as we knew her was very committed self sacrificing, loving, dedicated and adventurous she will be forever missed but never forgotten.
