Marie E. Gillis Moore, 91, peacefully went home to be with her Lord on the morning of Saturday, May 24, 2014, at home, in Spring, Texas. Marie was born September 17, 1922 in Starks, Louisiana to John Pleasant and Eliza Ann Humble Gillis. She attended public school in Starks, graduating in 1940. She later attended beauty school in Beaumont, Texas and worked as a clerk at the shipyard during the war. On December 30, 1947, Marie wed Harry Thomas Moore, Jr. in Port Arthur, Texas where they lived happily together for over 58 years. She is a retiree from Port Arthur ISD, where she worked in school cafeterias for many years. Marie was a loving, caring person. She will always be remembered for her kind and generous nature. She loved cooking, sewing and shopping. But most of all, she loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Lawson Gillis (Vernell) and James Aubrey Gillis; and beloved sister and best friend, Bessie Ashworth (Luke). Survivors include her son, John Thomas Moore (Jean); daughter, Becky Ann Martinez (Nick); Grandchildren, Lane Martinez (Lindsey) and Darci Martinez (Rafael); brothers, Dewey Gillis (Melba), Marvin Gillis and Ronald Gillis (Susie); sister-in-law, Margaret Gillis; many, many nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00pm, Wednesday, May 28 at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home, 5200 39th Street, Groves Texas. Services will be at 10:00am, Thursday, May 29, also at the funeral home. Dr. W. Clay Faulk, presiding. Burial will follow at Gillis Cemetery in Starks, Louisiana.
