Margaret Young, age 93, passed away in Houston, Texas July 20, 2017, where she had lived since 2004.
She was born September 21, 1923 to the late Josephine Barbuscia and Phillip Digiovanni in Beaumont, Texas, where she lived until she moved to Port Arthur as a teen. Margaret attended Woodrow Wilson Junior High School and was a graduate of the 1941 class of Thomas Jefferson High School. She then attended Port Arthur College, working for various businesses in the area in bookkeeping and loan servicing during WWII, including the Kansas City Railroad and Houston First Federal Savings & Loan, where she met Robert (Bob) B. Young, Jr., her future husband.
They married in 1951 and soon had two children. After their second child was born, they moved to Groves where they had three more children and lived in the same house until 2003. From 2004 until her death, she lived in Houston to be closer to her children following Bob’s death.
Margaret and Bob took many summer camping trips throughout the U.S. with their children, and she and Bob continued to travel after his retirement. She also loved going to Crystal Beach and Galveston and spent many summer weeks there.
A member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Groves for 50 years, Margaret was also active in the Altar Society. In addition, she volunteered for many years at the Groves Public Library, and she and Bob were active members of the Port Arthur Italian-American Club. Margaret also enjoyed reading; following her favorite sports teams, the Houston Rockets and Dallas Cowboys; playing bingo and poker; and keeping up with children, grandchildren and her first great grandchild. Margaret also took art lessons late in life and surprised herself with how well some of them turned out. She gave each of her children paintings as a gift this past Christmas.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Robert Burns Young, Jr. and two sisters and a brother, Marie Genuardi, Katherine Holter, and Peter Digiovanni. Margaret is survived by her son, Kent Young and wife Ikumi of Honolulu, Hawaii; Janice (Young) Giordano and husband John of Houston, Texas; Don Young of Georgetown, Texas; Phillip Young of Center, Texas; John Young and wife Rebecca of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren Amy (Belaire) Stafford, Bobby Giordano, Sean Young, Jack Young, and a great grandchild, Jude Stafford.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Sunday, July 23, from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at Clayton Thompson funeral home in Groves A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Groves on Monday, July 24, 2017 at 10 am. Father J. C. Coon, officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery located at 25th Street at 9th Avenue in Port Arthur.
