Odile Thibodeaux Cormier went to be with the Lord on October 6, 2017. She was born in Rayne, Louisiana on April 3, 1925, the eleventh child of Ferrier and Marente (Richard) Thibodeaux.

She married Dalton Cormier, Sr in 1944. Soon after, they moved to Groves, Texas, where they lived for more than 60 years. Odile worked for most of her life, as a sales associate and sales manager for Spencer’s, Dryden’s, and Dillards department stores, and as a personal seamstress.

After her son Thomas was born with Downs Syndrome, she became an advocate for the rights of the disabled community. She helped found the Mid-County Society of Friends to the Handicapped and was one of the original teachers at the Mid-County Opportunity Center, which served children with developmental disabilities. The lobbying efforts of the group, convinced Congressman Jack Brooks to sponsor the American with Disabilities Act.

She was a devout Catholic and a long-time parishioner at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and St. Peter Catholic Church in Groves.

She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings, her husband Dalton Sr., and her sons Thomas and Gary Cormier.

She is survived by her son, Dalton Cormier, Jr., grandson, Troy Cormier, great grandsons, Corbin and Colin, daughter in law, Susan Cormier and granddaughters, Candice Moore and Karen Pate, great grandchildren, Mason Moore, Aimee and Jeremy Sherman, Annalise Pate and daughter in law, Debbie Cormier. She is also survived by son, Jim Cormier and family.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 8, 2017 from 5 pm until 8 pm at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home, a rosary to be prayed at 7 pm at the funeral home. A 2 pm Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 9, 2017 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Groves. Celebrant will be Rev. J. C. Coon. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
